The Lawman Bill of Exchange Live Training
Understanding the Law Behind the Instrument
A bill of exchange is more than a document containing commercial terminology. Its legal effect depends on the instrument’s actual language, the relationship between the parties, the underlying obligation, proper authority, supporting evidence, and compliance with applicable law.
The Lawman Bill of Exchange Live Training is designed to help participants move beyond commonly repeated information and develop a clearer understanding of how bills of exchange operate within lawful commercial transactions.

The Purpose of This Training
This training is not about copying documents, collecting powerful-sounding phrases, or assuming that an instrument becomes enforceable simply because it has been notarized, mailed, or left unanswered.
Participants will be encouraged to examine the questions that give a commercial instrument its lawful foundation:
-
What transaction created the obligation?
-
Who presently owes the money?
-
Who has authority to order payment?
-
Why is the drawee authorized or obligated to pay?
-
What evidence supports the amount?
-
What law governs the transaction?
-
Who is entitled to enforce the instrument?
-
What defenses or claims may apply?
The goal is to help students understand the substance behind the document so they can better identify what the law requires before taking action.
